Leaders: Change Your Underwear

Doing research for our webinar “Give Change a Chance” which takes place at 1:00pm (EDT) on April 21, I was struck, once again, with the battle that each of us must go through to get to next level development.

I kept thinking we need a car wash for our brains. Think about it for a minute. Would you really keep wearing the same clothes and underwear day after day? Of course not. And would you only eat potato chips and drink soda and nothing else for weeks on end?

Then why do we keep repeating the same old thoughts day after day after day after…. you get what I mean.

Question: do you always take the same route to work each day? And if there is construction do you sit in traffic and complain or make a quick turn around and find an alternative way to work?

A study was done years ago about the quality of care received in hospitals in the middle of the night by tired interns and residents. Did you know that it was not until 2003 that there was congressional legislation requiring residents to work 80 hour weeks rather than the insane 120 hours that most had been clocking.

One pushback was from older physicians who said “If it was good enough for me it is good enough for them.”

Interesting that if we suffered we won’t say it out loud but most of us want others to have to learn in the school of hard knocks also.

The big question is “would you rather have those you mentor do what you did (after all you are successful) or find new and better, faster and smarter ways to get work done”?

Remember, change your underwear, change what you eat, and especially change what you are thinking when it repeats and repeats and repeats and….you get it!
